Biking the American River Trail
I love bike trails. As a kid I would take off alone through Forest Park in St. Louis, but more recently I’ve had memorable solo rides along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail in Anchorage and the Silver Strand in San Diego. LL wanted in on the fun and promised to join me on a ride in Sacramento while Kid Two was competing the Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix. We walked down Capitol Mall – deserted on a Saturday – to Sacramento’s Old Town, where we rented cruisers and set out along the first few miles of the American River Trail. It’s a dry winter, as I’ve mentioned, and even though the strands of trees indicated a definite riparian zone, the water was nowhere in sight, and there was a strong homeless vibe along the section we biked. I like this photo the best – a single sturdy leather shoe among the fallen leaves, human and nature detritus side by side.
